Hanbing (Steve) Zhou, MD, is a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon who is highly trained in surgical and nonsurgical treatments for alleviating back and neck pain.
“Patients come to me and are often surprised that I don’t immediately recommend surgery,” Dr. Zhou said. “But surgery isn’t always necessary – often, their pain can be managed through conservative measures such as physical therapy, injections, or some other type of pain management therapy.”
According to Dr. Zhou, his main goal is to get his patients back to living pain-free lives as quickly as possible. Sometimes that means a nonsurgical approach and sometimes it doesn’t.

Endoscopic spine surgery is an advanced form of minimally invasive surgery that is designed to give patients even quicker recovery and less recurring pain. In fact, endoscopic spine surgery is considered the least invasive of the minimally invasive types of surgeries. Read more.
Lumbar spine fusion is typically performed to alleviate the pain and disability caused by conditions such as degenerative disc disease or spondylolisthesis, although it can also be used to strengthen a weak or unstable lumbar spine, fractures, scoliosis, or deformity. Read more.
“My patients know I am going to fully explain their options and give them the information they need to make the best decision for them.”
“I saw Dr. Zhou for my back pain. He referred me for an MRI and I was called within two days to schedule the MRI. The doctor was very nice and pleasant, I felt very comfortable talking to him. The staff was very nice and efficient as well. Great office if you need help with your back or neck!”

“I have been suffering lumbar stenosis for years with multiple radiofrequency ablations short-term fixes. Eventually, I decided to have a go at more permanent corrective surgery, hence lumbar laminectomy was performed on me by Dr. Zhou, who has an easygoing attitude and good communication with patients, which made a good impression. The surgery was complex and only happened about 10 days ago, so it's too early to judge its long-term results. But healing and recovery are going well and there are as yet no complications.”
